OBEISANCE : Homage to Lord Shiva

This album presents three recordings of live performances by the legendary Pt. Vijay Raghav Rao honoring the eternal, creative spirit of Lord Shiva

"Brilliant. Bristling with hue and sparkle. Marked by delicateness of phrasing, daring leaps and taut rhythm" - The Hindustan Times

"Unleashes springs of melody with casual ease, capturing hearts of the discerning" - The Times of India

Obeisance to Shiva, the cause
Obeisance to Shiva, our infinite soul
Obeisance to Shiva, the omnipresent
Obeisance to Shiva, the beautiful
Obeisance to Shiva, the source of creative energy
Obeisance to Shiva, who acknowledges devotion
Obeisance to Shiva, the eternal artist

1. SHIVAKAUNS

This performance features Panditji’s rendering of one of his contributions to the canon of Indian classical music: a Raga he composed as a paean to the glory of Lord Shiva. The singular spirit is an expression of the essence of beauty; its source a contentment born of artistic fulfillment and perpetual awe for one whom Panditji regards as the ultimate source of unceasing creativity. A hallmark of the exposition is the delineation of emotion through the power of unadorned, deceptively simple and stately musical patterns that conjure a grand, godly vision characteristic of the omniscient Lord Shiva.

Aalap; Gat in Jhap taal (10 beats per cycle); Drut in Ek taal (12 beats)

Tabla: Pt. Mahadev Indorkar

2. MARUBIHAG

This performance of a popular, modern Raga in the Indian classical music canon shuns the populist approach in favor of a fresh, deeply introspective rendition that is at once enlightening and lively. Equally felicitous by reaching down into the lower octave with a vibrant, bass flute or high up into the treble, the piece glistens with finesse and intellectual rigor. In keeping with the spirit of affection for Lord Shiva, the delineation expresses an austere grandeur.

Aalap; Khayal in Ek taal (12 beats); Drut in Teen taal (16 beats)

Tabla: Pt. Mahadev Indorkar

3. DES (Encore)

This lilting selection performed as an encore has Panditji reminiscing about his artistic origins. Vivid and resplendent with colorful, cascading note patterns, the piece stands on its own as a tiny, glistening gem of music; even as it hints of swirling rice fields, convivial rivers flowing down from proud, giving mountains and a glorious sun shining over them as in his land of artistic awakening.

Drut in Ek taal (12 beats)

Tabla: Sanjay Kumar
